Referrals & admissions
How to become a patient
Groote Schuur is a tertiary referral hospital in the Western Cape public health system. Except in emergencies, patients are referred to our specialist clinics — here's how the journey works.
01
Start at your local clinic
Visit your nearest community health centre, day hospital or GP. Most conditions are treated right there — and they know when specialist care is needed.
02
Get a referral letter
If you need specialist care, your clinic or district hospital refers you to Groote Schuur with a letter and your medical details, and an appointment is arranged.
03
Attend your appointment
Bring your referral letter, ID and proof of income (fees are means-tested). Arrive early, and bring any medication you're currently taking.
Being admitted
What to bring with you
- Your South African ID, passport or birth certificate
- Your referral letter and appointment card
- Proof of income or pension card (fees are means-tested)
- All medication you are currently taking, in its packaging
- Toiletries, sleepwear and comfortable day clothes
- Reading material — and patience; we care for everyone who needs us
Please leave at home
Large sums of money, jewellery and other valuables. The hospital cannot take responsibility for personal belongings.
